Understanding the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The NDIS is Australia’s first national scheme for people with disability. Instead of funding programs and agencies directly, the NDIS gives funding to individuals so they can choose the services that best meet their needs. According to industry data, there are currently around 450,000 participants and over 11,600 registered providers delivering NDIS funded services As the scheme grows, it is projected that around 500,000 participants will need support by 2024, requiring nearly 353,000 workers- which is why finding quality providers and support staff is so important

How NDIS Funding Works

  1. Eligibility: To be eligible, individuals must be under 65 years old at the time of application, have a permanent or significant disability, and need support to complete daily activities.
  2. Planning Process: Once eligible, participants meet with an NDIS planner to develop a personalised plan, setting goals and detailing the supports needed to achieve them.
  3. Funding Categories: NDIS funding is divided into three broad categories:
  • Core Supports – everyday activities, personal care, transport, or community participation.
  • Capacity Building – developing skills for independence, such as employment training or therapy services.
  • Capital Supports – equipment and home or vehicle modifications.

Participants can choose any registered or non‑registered provider to deliver services, giving them flexibility and control.

Frequently asked questions about SIL

SIL is a type of NDIS support that helps people with disability live in their own home or a shared home with others, while still getting the assistance they need. Support workers can help with: Daily tasks like cooking, cleaning and shopping. Personal care such as showering and dressing. Keeping on top of routines, medication and appointments. Building confidence to try new things and take on more independence. The goal is simple: to give you the freedom of your own space, while knowing support is always close by.

Who is SIL For?

SIL is designed for people who:

  • Want to live more independently but need regular help.
  • Would like the option of living with others or in their own place.
  • Need support to manage everyday tasks and stay safe.
  • It’s usually best suited to people who need a higher level of support each day or overnight. If you’re unsure whether SIL is right for you, an NDIS planner or support coordinator can help you decide.

How SIL Can Benefit You

  • Independence with Support: Learn new skills while still having a helping hand.
  • Choice and Control: Decide where you live, who you live with and what kind of support you get. Community Connection: Get involved in local activities and make new friends.
